Apple Lane Inn, Aptos, CA |
|
The Apple Lane Inn is a
charming, old-fashioned farmhouse. Rather than being upscale, this B&B
(Bed and Breakfast) is very homey and is like visiting Grandma in the
early 1900's. One of the best things about this B&B is it can
accommodate children and pets in the unique Wine
Cellar Room. It has a separate garden entrance and dining area. Also
entertaining are the variety of farm animals - goats, horses, pheasants,
chickens, and the honorary bunny. The
walls of the hallways are filled with period photos of the building as it
had a variety of functions throughout its history.
Each of the rooms at Apple Lane Inn has a
different theme. Be sure when you reserve a room, to give your preference
of a bathroom with a shower or a bathtub. You can check the room
views on their website to see which rooms either have a shower or tub.
If you are staying midweek, remember to ask for the midweek $20 discount. Upon our arrival down the country road we
were met by owner, Doug Groom, a thoughtful and attentive host who doubles
as groundskeeper and local historian. After showing us to our room we took advantage of his offer
to tour the grounds. We were
personally introduced to the horses, goats, purebred roosters, rabbits and
the brilliant prize pheasant. We toured the barbecue area and wedding
reception facility while we took in the “turn-of-the-century” look and
feel. After updating us on
local events for the weekend, he gave us the run of the place.
We took a quick trip to New Brighton beach,
(5 minutes driving- and bonfires allowed in the evening), and stopped in
for a bite at Gayle’s Bakery to test some local deli fare.
Upon our return we were greeted to the same warm, quiet farmhouse
with an evening glow that was impressive.
The friendly farm cat warmed up to us as we caught the news on the
2nd floor landing. The highlight of our stay was the sumptuous
breakfast served family style in the main dining room. The hearty
breakfast included scrambled eggs with spinach, mushrooms and feta cheese,
sausage, toast, fresh fruit, granola, and a delicate, sweet pastry bread.
Beverages included fruit juice, coffee and a variety of teas. The
European, family style seating allowed us to meet other guests and make
new friends. We also enjoyed listening to the Inn's chef and
pianist, Carol McMillen. Her selections included some of her compositions,
Breakfast Samba, and Beside A Waterfall. Apple Lane Inn is in close proximity to
beaches, shopping, restaurants, and day spas. Beach towns of Capitola and
Santa Cruz are within 10 minutes of driving from the B&B. |
